IC market’s 2011 growth depends on NAND, oilMarch 18, 2011 - At the recent IMAPS Global Business Council meeting in Fort McDowell AZ, Brian Matas, VP of market research for IC Insights, reported on several of their forecasts for the semiconductor industry. The analyst firm expects the IC market to grow at least 10% in 2011, "as long as the price of a barrel of oil averages $100 or less," he said. "If the price of oil surges well past $100 per barrel it could dampen the current economic recovery."In their traditional yearly outlook, IC Insights forecast a $344B semiconductor market, $59B in capital spending, and a $46B materials market for 2011.(Source: IC Insights)Of special interest was the growth in NAND-based applications. Tablet computers such as the i-PAD, the Samsung Galaxy, and the Blackberry playbook are forecast to grow from 1.3M units to 86M units per year and smartphone sales forecast to increase from 176M units to 700M units. Thus, NAND demand, in the period 2009-2014, is expected to be significant. For example, IC Insights forecasts that NAND use in smartphones will increase from 3.6Gb per unit to 22.2Gb per unit. If that’s correct, 20BGb of flash will be needed for cellphones (enhanced and smartphones) alone. Music players such as the i-Pod, tablet computers, and any inroads made by NAND-based solid-state drives will add to that total.Top: Cell phone shipments by class in millions of units. Bottom: NAND flash memory usage in cell phones, in GB per handset. (Source: IC Insights, Samsung)Capacity utilization at 300mm facilities was above 96% for all four quarters of 2010. 85% of the world’s 300mm capacity is now concentrated in the hands of 10 companies.2010 capacity leaders’ shares of total worldwide 300mm capacity. China’s IC sales to remain robustBy Tekan (China Daily)Updated: 2010-05-20 Despite a possible slowdown in the global market, research firms say China’s integrated circuit (IC) market will continue robust growth in 2008.According to a report from research firm iSuppli, turnover of China’s IC market will reach $58 billion this year, an increase of 12 percent over 2007.The research firm attributes the growth to dynamic demand for China’s industrial control capacity, safety and monitoring, especially from the auto sector."Although a slowdown is hovering in the world’s IC market, I think China will see rapid growth in the coming year due to the continuing shift of IC investment operations from developed nations and the Chinese government’s regulatory support," says Yu Zhongyu, president of China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA), in an industry forum last month.According to research firm CCID Consulting, sales revenue of China’s IC market hit $79.15 billion last year, up 28.6 percent from 2006.Computers, network communications and consumer goods accounted for 88.1 percent of China’s IC market last year, with growth in those sectors ranging from 15 to 20 percent. The research firm predicts that China’s IC market will reach new highs in 2008 due to the upcoming 2008 Olympics, widespread digital TV sales and adoption of third-generation mobile phone technology."Although the growth rate of China’s IC market will see a slight slowdown, China will still be an important force in the global market over the next five years," says the latest report from CCID Consulting. It notes that the compound growth rate of China’s IC market will reach 16.2 percent in the next five years, while the total IC market will reach 1.08 trillion yuan by 2011.China generates the most sales of integrated circuits in the world, with international giants such as Panasonic, Cypress and IBM increasing their investments in the country over the past few years.China now makes 40 percent of the world’s personal computers, 47 percent of all mobile phones and 48 percent of televisions, all of which create enormous demand for IC products.Yu from CSIA says the average annual growth of China’s IC market reached 40 percent during the past five years. The projected slowing of growth this year in China is a reflection of the sluggish global IC market.According to figures from Semiconductor Industries Association (SIA), the growth rate of the global IC market last year was 3.2 percent, far lower than the expected 10 percent. But SIA said in November that the world’s semiconductor market is unlikely to see a recession in the near term."Consumer purchases continued to drive industry growth in 2007 despite rising energy costs and other concerns," said George Scalise, president of the SIA in a statement. "Unit sales of personal computers, cellphone handsets, MP3 players and digital televisions were very robust in 2007.""In terms of production capacity, the world’s IC market has seen a fast growth," said Yu. "But the sharp price decrease of IC products on the world market has led to a slowdown in revenue growth, which will have a negative impact on the Chinese market in the long term." - [ 2011-05-26 ]IC Insights predic
IC Insights predicts 12% automotive IC market growth in 2011IC Insights, in their IC Market Drivers report, predicts that the rapid motorization of China and other emerging markets along with the recovery of the U.S. automotive market, coupled with growing demand for on-board electronics, will help propel the automotive IC market to $17.2 billion in 2011. This is an increase of 12 percent, following a 45 percent increase in automotive sales in 2010 that halted a two-year decline in automotive IC market. According to the report, global shipments of new cars are expected to rise almost 5 percent in 2011 to 55.8 million units. The U.S. auto market is emerging from recession. Meanwhile, China outpaced new car shipments in the U.S. by 50 percent in 2010 and is expected to continue to do so until 2015.Growth drivers for ICs include active safety and telematics systems, communications and entertainment convergence, and green initiatives such as energy savings and reduced emissions. In safety and telematics, systems such as self parking, active cruise control, lane departure warning systems, and electronic stability control have been implemented in Japan and Europe. An ESC system consists of a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and a pressure sensor. These can be made using microelectromechanical system (MEMS) process.Automakers are testing system that will allow smartphones to dock with a large display on a car’s center console, essentially replacing radio/CD/nav systems on today’s cars.Electric and hybrid cars are not expected to contribute significantly to the automotive IC market in the immediate future. Shipments of hybrid and electric vehicles are forecast to increase 8 percent in 2011.The automotive IC market is forecast to grow to $20.9 billion through 2014, representing an average annual increase of 14.5 percent per year from 2009 to 2014. That growth rate tops the IC growth rate in other system markets including computer (11.7 percent), communications (8.1 percent) and consumer (10.6 percent) systems, as well as the total worldwide IC market (10.6 percent) over the same period.
